The amount of electronic data generated by computerization—digital data—is growing at unprecedented rates. As more and more people use mobile phones and the Internet for social and digital interactions, customers generate increasing volumes of digital data trails. With consent, providers can tap into this wealth of information to get to know their customers digitally and offer them products better suited to their needs.

CGAP’s Data Analytics Initiative explores the role of digital data and advanced analytics for the provision of financial services for low-income customers. One particular area of focus is on Digital Credit, i.e. the provision of instant, short-term microloans delivered via digital delivery channels. While the proliferation of digital credit deployments is one indication of the growing role of digital data in the provision of financial services, we explore additional use cases of how providers can leverage digital data trails and advanced analytics to enhance financial inclusion.
