Alaa is a lawyer and managing partner of the 48-year-old firm Abbassi Law Office based in Amman, Jordan. With more than 18 years experience as a corporate attorney his legal practice areas also include insurance, labor, telecommunications, mediation, and litigation. In 2007 he became a member of the Policy Advisory Cadre at CGAP and participated in diagnostic assessments of the microfinance legal and regulatory environment in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and Yemen. In addition, he oversaw the translation into Arabic of CGAP's Guiding Principles on Regulation and Supervision of Microfinance. He received an LL.M in international business law from University of Western Sydney in Australia, an LL.B. from Mutah University in Jordan. He speaks Arabic and English.
