Overview
In the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, branchless banking continues to be CGAP’s main area of work, with strategic forays in key countries (e.g., Mexico) to help shape some of the rapid regulatory and financial sector developments across the region. In broader policy making arena, there have been increased involvement and formal mandates of financial supervisory agencies for fostering financial inclusion, and sustained intervention from governments in the areas of directed lending, government banks, and the direct provision of microcredit through other means. Demand for microfinance supervisory capacity building is increasing, as many countries promote or deal with increased formalization and transformation of microfinance entities. Lastly, of great concern to all has been the advocacy of debt forgiveness by governments, especially in Central America.
CGAP’s focus for its work in Latin America is to help simplify and disseminate good policy and regulatory measures, and promote and facilitate peer learning, particularly in influential countries. In addition, we will continue supporting technology and graduation projects, as well as monitor and document key developments in critical markets.
