About the project
Orange, the key brand of France Telecom with a strong presence in Africa, has developed its mobile money product called Orange Money. In Mali, Orange Money will allow customers to deposit and withdraw money, transfer money, buy airtime, pay for goods at certain retail partners and pay bills. Orange Mali has developed a field-based strategy to strengthen its agent network and educate customers about the financial product. Specifically, Orange is using “mobile coaches” to train and support its agent network. They are also using Orange Money “boys & girls” to increase customer uptake and usage. Regional supervisors manage both the mobile coaches and Orange Money “boys and girls”. Orange has partnered with many of the largest MFI networks in Mali to serve as agent locations, along with other retail outlets.
Orange has established a partnership with BNP Paribas, using the local subsidiary in Mali – BICIM. The bank is responsible for issuing and guaranteeing the electronic money.
With the launch of Orange Money in other countries in the West African UMEAO region (including Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal), there is the potential for cross-border remittances. This is facilitated by the fact that these countries are regulated under the same central bank (BCEAO) and use the same currency (CFA franc).
Status of project
Orange Money launched in Mali in May 2010.
