Understanding Multiple Borrowing and Avoiding Over-indebtedness Among Clients
February 2, 2012
On January 12 and 13, CGAP, IFMR and MicroSave hosted a virtual conference to discuss thoughts and experiences around multiple borrowing and avoiding over-indebtedness. Over 200 microfinance institution managers, investors, advisers, and researchers from 48 countries shared their ideas, generating over 700 comments and numerous suggestions for MFIs, policy makers and funders.

Winners from the 2011 CGAP Microfinance Photography Contest

The winner of this year’s Microfinance Photography Contest is Ngo Quang Phuc of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. The winning photo of workers harvesting salt was taken in Khanh Hoa, on the South Central Coast of Vietnam. The judges also selected 28 other photos as finalists from over 2000 entries from more than 70 countries around the world.

Financial Access Studies Highlight Benefits of Better Product Design

Empowering the poor to better manage their own lives and to seize opportunities to start a business or grow their incomes goes beyond simply giving them a savings account, a microloan, or insurance. According to a new paper published by CGAP, unless the product is properly designed to meet their needs, people in the poorest communities are unlikely to take up financial services.

However, a new paper by CGAP and IFC warns that credit reporting may not be a "cure-all."

Is over-indebtedness a widespread problem? A new CGAP paper looks at over-indebtedness among microborrowers and argues that the issue has been studied so little that there is simply no empirical answer to that question. The authors argue that there are strong reasons why lenders and governments in certain markets should want to know more.

CGAP has released a new white paper on behalf of the G20’s Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI), "Global Standard-Setting Bodies and Financial Inclusion for the Poor – Toward Proportionate Standards and Guidance,” which aims to raise awareness and frame issues to inform ongoing work by standard-setting bodies to integrate financial inclusion into normative standards.
