Funder survey
Drawing on portfolio information from leading donors and investors, the annual CGAP Microfinance Funder Survey provides data on cross-border funding to microfinance. Global and regional analyses shed light on who is funding what, where and how, and can help funders make more effective funding decisions.
MIV survey
The annual CGAP MIV Survey provides data on the performance of Microfinance Investment Vehicles (MIVs). Since 2009, performance indicators on Environment, social and governance (ESG) issues have been included in the survey.
SmartAid for Microfinance Index
SmartAid measures whether funding agencies are set up to support microfinance effectively. Its premise is that organizations that have a clear strategy and staff with relevant expertise, are transparent and accountable, share knowledge, and use appropriate funding instruments are better equipped to support microfinance. As such, the Index focuses on what funders can influence most directly—their internal management systems.
Microfinance Donor Peer Reviews
Using a peer review approach lauded by OECD’s Development Assistance Committee and numerous development leaders, CGAP took a hard look at the systems, procedures and incentives of 17 of the most important microfinance donors between 2002 and 2003.The reviews identified success factors and constraints to applying good practice in microfinance and provided concrete recommendations in Letters to Management for each agency. Subsequently, a few agencies received peer review check-ups.
Country-Level Effectiveness and Accountability Reviews (CLEARs)
The CLEARs are a methodology to assess funders’ contributions to building pro-poor financial systems, based on desk research and interviews. They combine a rapid financial sector analysis with an assessment of the effectiveness of funders’ systems and practices in a country CGAP conducted five CLEARs between 2004 and 2007 in Cambodia, Nicaragua, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
