How Do I Find Accepted Terminology for Microfinance?

As part of its role in setting standards across the microfinance industry, CGAP has worked with a range of partners to develop microfinance glossaries in six languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic and Chinese. The product of an intensive consultative process, these glossaries offer standard terminology which has been agreed amongst a broad group of microfinance and language experts.

We use these glossaries when we translate CGAP publications so that the terminology we use is consistent and standardized.

Ultimately, we hope to combine these glossaries into a multilingual dictionary for microfinance. In the meantime, we hope you will use them freely as reference guides.

Since language is constantly evolving, and microfinance is developing at such a pace, these are living documents. We welcome your feedback on the terminology you find here, and on new terminology you think we should include.
