Haiti - Statement from CGAP CEO Elizabeth Littlefield
January 26, 2010
Two weeks after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, CGAP continues to follow the situation closely. Our heart and thoughts are with Haitians who are suffering in unspeakable ways. We have many friends and colleagues in the country, including Fonkoze staff and clients.
We are deeply moved by the extraordinary strength of will, resilience and concern for clients that they and other microfinance organizations have shown. Many have been able to move quickly to find and help staff and clients, assess damages, and make plans to be operational again as soon as possible.
We recognize that rescue and immediate humanitarian aid are the urgent priority in the short term. As the country prepares to rebuild, we stand ready to be partners, in our small way, to help the microfinance sector thrive once again.
