CGAP recently surveyed the global outreach of a broader set of institutions, all of which focus to some degree on extending financial services downward from the economic level of the traditional clients of commercial banks. The research reported in this paper suggests that specialized MFIs account for a relatively small proportion of the total savings and loan services delivered by AFIs.
