The global microfinance sector is facing a crisis at a time when many borrowers are unable to repay their loans due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Launched on June 1, 2020, CGAP's biweekly survey of microfinance institutions (MFIs) is the first survey that aims to capture a full picture of how the crisis is evolving at the global, regional, and national levels.
In this blog series, CGAP will regularly share our analysis of the latest data for the duration of the survey. The questions we will explore include: How is COVID-19 impacting MFIs' portfolio quality? Are MFIs facing a liquidity crisis? Is the solvency of institutions at risk? What is the outlook for the sector among MFIs?
CGAP encourages all MFIs to participate in this global effort to support the microfinance sector by signing up for the survey here.
